PS5 Controller
Concept

Individual Work.

PlayStation played a huge part in my early interest in gaming culture. The new release of the PlayStation 5 shocked both competitors and fans across the globe in more ways than one. I decided to share my own fan inspired concept for the PS5.

Brand Language Inspo.
Sony has always been known for their linear, geometric, and clean design language. "Quality and compactness uncompromised" -- I used this as my guideline throughout my design process.
Emerging Technology.
At CES 2020, Sony revealed their one off Vision-S concept car -- showcasing all their new technologies and features. What stuck with me was the beautiful display they had across the front dashboard. The main purpose of displaying information isn't meant to distract you from your main activity, but always readily accessible at a quick glance. This idea allowed me to envision a step further on how to elevate and utilize more of the current touch sensor on the PS4 and on the newly released PS5 controller.
Hear what gamers had to say..

Predecessor Pain Points.
- The PS4 lacked paddle controls which later released a "back button attachment" as a modifier for gamers who wanted to advance their skills. Paddles allow players to keep their thumbs on the thumb-stick while using back paddles to preform advance moves.

- The Touch Pad is often left unused during game play and takes up majority of the controllers center face. Often times I find myself accidentally touching the 'touch pad' without intent. I find that there could be a better solution to utilize this technology with more a purposeful UI.
Pro Features.
Press the Easy-Switch button to cycle through the three pairing channels. Bring your controller to tournaments, a friends house, or anywhere to pair up with ease.

Ergonomic paddle system empowers your hands to keep pace with your head. Customize each paddle to continuously shoot faster, gain accuracy, and play more efficiently than ever before. Lock individual paddle side when not in use to avoid accidentally pressing buttons unintentionally.
Parametric Drawings.
CAD surfacing was created in SolidWorks.

User Interface

Wireframing.
High fidelity functional wireframes were created in Figma to map out the user interface. Above is a snippet of my workflow during the process of the visual touch bar center.

Through this activity, I mapped out the use-case scenario, the purpose of my design, and how information will be gathered, interacted, and displayed. This made it easier to mentally visualize how to animate each frame in Adobe After Effects.

Visual Control Panel.
Display simple telemetry and other useful information during your game play such as FPS, ping, current party members, notifications from friends, stats, music, and more. Gain quick access of your controller sensitivity settings, color bar, all without having to pause your game. You can finally turn off that light bar and reserve your battery life longer!

Connectivity.
Turn on your controller by pressing the PS button. Connect your controller to your PlayStation account via WIFI and hold the bluetooth button to pair it to the console. Smart connectivity allows you to bring your controller wherever you are and still utilize your saved presets.
